California State Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship Review

Black Belt Absolute Division winners Marcel Fortuna (Ralph Gracie), Antonio Braga Neto (Ralph Gracie), Diego Herzog (Cyclone MMA) with Andre Glodzinski (Cia Paulista), Producer of the CA STATE OPEN 2010.

The 1st Annual California State Open Jiu Jitsu Championships was held this past weekend in Sacramento, California. Hosted by Cia Paulista Sacramento and Coaching Kids, MMA, the event provided a legitimate, International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation and regulation standard tournament for the first time in the Sacramento area.

The tournament was held Sunday, September 19, 2010, at the auditorium of Capital Christian High School in Sacramento. There were 2 fighting mats and over 100 competitors, from kids to adults in all belt and weight levels. The tournament was refereed following the rules as laid down by the IBJJF.

Students and coaches from all over the Northern California area came to participate in the tournament, including Capital City BJJ, Kutgar BJJ, Cyclone MMA, Casio Werneck BJJ, Crispim BJJ, Waza BJJ, Charles Gracie BJJ Truckee Tahoe, Charles Gracie BJJ Reno, Speedy Gonzales, BJJ Academy of Sacramento, Paradise BJJ, World Team USA, Yemaso BJJ, Guillobel BJJ and Ralph Gracie. Cia Paulista students united from gyms in the El Dorado Hills, Santa Cruz, Sacramento, and from Edmonton, Canada.

One of the highlights of the tournament was the Absolute Black Belt Division, which offered $1000 cash prize to the first place winner. Black Belt Antonio Braga Neto was placed against Marcel Fortuna, both from Ralph Gracie in the first fight. Winner of the Brown Belt Absolute Division Eliot Kelly from Cia Paulista qualified to fight against Diego Herzog  of Cyclone MMA. Braga Neto won the fight against Fortuna and Herzog won against Kelly. In the final, Braga Neto versus Herzog, Antonio Braga Neto, championed, taking home the $1000 in cash and medals from the CA State Open 2010.

The CA State Open team intends to offer a cash prize again next year for the Absolute Black Belt Division, as well as expanding the tournament to 2 full days of competition. The team’s ambition is to provide a legitimate Northern California tournament for students, fighters, and the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community to connect and participate in professional competition in the area as well as expanding the knowledge of the sport through exchange and experience.
